How does it work ?
The Meyer Square is an educational tool that can be used in many ways. The letters can be used to explain the direction of strikes. For example, a furious strike (Zornhauw) passes through the vector from B to F or from H to D.
You can also use the numbers to work out orderly hit sequences. There are several possible sequences. These sequences are made up of the four numbers that are the same distance from the center. For example, let's take the sequence composed of the numbers that are farthest from the center (in blue).
- The 1 in blue in the top right square means that you should start the sequence by hitting the top right first.
- The 2 in blue in the opposite bottom left corner means that the second strike should be aimed at the bottom left square.
- The 3 in blue at the bottom right indicates the opening to aim for in order to make the next strike and the 4 in blue at the opposite top left indicates in which square the sequence of strikes should end.
You can choose other drills by following the other sequences of numbers that are closer and closer to the center. Alternating colors make it easier to differentiate these sequences.
To further improve the exercise, it is recommended to alternate different types of strikes: with the true edge, with the false edge, or with the flat of the sword.
Finally, as shown in the engraving, it is also possible to improve the precision of one's thrusts by aiming at the center of the Meyer square.
